Children and physical distancing

    • Parents should address children’s concerns and answer their queries regarding COVID-19 with calmness, empathy and confidence.
    • Reassure your child that adults are working to maintain their safety and that physical distancing is an effective way to protect them.
    • Provide children with a simple, age appropriate explanation about the disease, how it is transmitted, and the best ways to prevent getting infected. Talk to them about simple steps such as washing hands for 20 seconds with soap and water.
    • Teach them the meaning of physical distancing and explain that a distance of two metres( six feet) between individuals is needed to prevent the spread of the virus. If needed, explain the meaning of home-quarantine and isolation.
    • Arrange home furniture in a manner that it helps facilitate distance between individuals.
    • Explain the importance of sleeping on a separate bed.
    • Explain how to physically communicate with others and the importance of avoiding touching, cuddling, and kissing as much as possible to protect their health.
    • Teach children important personal hygiene habits, such as hand-washing and using a sanitizer in the absence of water.
    • Educate children about the importance of not sharing personal items with others such as a toothbrush, drinking glass, etc.
    • Encourage children to play and follow their regular routines while taking necessary precautions.
    • While physical distancing is important, maintain social connections through virtual mediums such as video chat and schedule a time for children to speak to their family and loved ones.
