Diabetics

Make the right choices.  Keep diabetes away.

Diabetes – What Is It?

Diabetes mellitus occurs when the body’s blood sugar (glucose) levels are excessively high. These high levels occur either because the body is unable to produce enough insulin to counteract the glucose, or because the body is producing enough insulin but the body isn’t using it correctly.  There are two different forms of diabetes mellitus:

Type 1

Diabetes mellitus type 1 is the less common form of diabetes found in between 5% and 10% of cases.  Type 1 diabetes mellitus results from the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells from the pancreas.

Type 2

The second type of diabetes mellitus is much more common and is found in between 90% and 95% of diabetics above the age of 20.  Type 2 diabetes occurs due to either the body’s resistance to insulin or the body’s failure to produce enough insulin and so blood sugar levels rise to abnormal heights.

Remember, diabetes should be taken seriously.  Diabetes can damage the vital organs and cause severe damage.

Diabetes – The Symptoms

It is important to be aware of the symptoms of diabetes and to understand that symptoms may vary from one person to another.

The most common symptoms of diabetes mellitus are:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Feeling cold
  • Shivering
  • Rapid and significant weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Inflammations
  • Slower healing of wounds or repetitive injuries
  • Anxiety
  • Red, swollen and weak gums

Keeping Diabetes Away

By making the right lifestyle decisions you may be able to keep diabetes away:

  • Eat right by choosing healthy foods
  • Maintain a healthy, balanced diet
  • Exercise on a regular basis to keep your heart healthy and strong
  • Sustain your ideal weight

Diabetes – The Treatment

Diabetes is a disorder that can be managed in order to avoid long-term complications that can affect the body’s vital organs. The main way to manage diabetes is to control blood sugar levels.

By simply maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, by exercising regularly and by controlling blood sugar levels, diabetics may be able to avoid the need for any medical treatment – in other cases, however, the need for insulin, or other prescribed medications, is necessary alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise.  In any case, blood sugar levels must be kept under control.
