Dr. Wael Abou Ismail Madkour graduated in 1990 from Ain Shams University Medical College, Cairo, Egypt, where he joined the residency training programme in obstetrics and gynaecology. After three years, he successfully finished the programme and got his Master Degree in 1995 and was appointed as assistant clinical lecturer in the same college – a post he held for 3 years. He was involved in teaching clinical activities as well as research work, which led to acquiring his MD degree in 1998 when he was appointed as a clinical lecturer. Then he moved to Vienna, Austria for a short scholarship at the Institute of Professor Fiechtinger & Semilvies Women’s Hospital, undergoing IVF and ultrasound training for three months before moving to the UK in 1999 to get his MRCOG (in 2000). He spent almost five years in the UK, the first 3 years in general obstetrics and gynaecology training, improving his skills in laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and ultrasound at major teaching hospitals in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before moving to the lovely city of Edinburgh, where he spent 2 wonderful years as a clinical fellow in the Reproductive Endocrinology Centre/EFREC, training in all the different aspects of assisted reproduction, learning sperm extraction procedures, and taking part in lab-based research and publication.
