The Department of Neurology of Rashid Hospital is the biggest specialized neurological service in the UAE and has highly trained staff with various fields of interest and subspecialties of neurology. It provides medical services not only to Rashid Hospital and other hospitals under the umbrella of the DHA, but also to patients from other emirates in the UAE.

- Our services include but are not limited to:
A. Inpatients:
I. Acute neurological care for patients in the accident and emergency department in Rashid Hospital.
II. Admission, diagnosis and management of neurology patients.
III. Inward follow-up of neurology patients.
IV. Treatment and management of referred cases with neurological complaints admitted by other medical specialties (from Rashid Hospital, Dubai Hospital, Latifa Hospital and from the Trauma Centre).
V. Admission and treatment of patients in the infusion therapy center for intravenous prednisone and Tysabri.
B. Outpatients:
- General Neurology Clinics:
- Two clinics per week for nationals
(7:30 am to 2:30 pm) and
- One neurology clinic per week for expatriates
3:30 pm to 10:30 pm
- Specialized neurology clinics (epilepsy, dystonia and participation in a multidisciplinary chronic pain clinic).
We provide new therapeutic modalities (Baclofen pump refilling and programming, Tysabri) and occipital nerve block and trigger point injections.
C. Clinical neurophysiology services:
The Unit of Neurophysiology is responsible for providing the following services:
1. Outpatient Services
Daily (7:30 am to 2:30 pm) performance of clinical neurophysiological investigations (including conventional, ambulatory and video monitoring EEG, electromyography, nerve conduction studies, evoked potentials, reflexes, autonomic function and neuromuscular studies including single fiber EMG) to out patients referred from:
a. The outpatient clinics of Rashid, Dubai and Latifa hospitals.
b. The Trauma Center
c. All PHCs (primary healthcare centers) within Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
2. The inpatient services
a. Clinical neurophysiological investigations as mentioned in the outpatient services in addition to polysomnography (sleep studies) to inpatients from Rashid, Dubai, Latifa hospitals and the Trauma Center.
b. Portable inward EEG, EMG and nerve conduction studies to immobile inpatients admitted in the wards and ICUs of Rashid and Dubai hospitals and the Trauma Center.
c. Transcranial doppler studies to inpatients of Rashid Hospital, Dubai Hospital and the Trauma Center.
D. Educational activities:
1. Participating in meetings and teaching activities of undergraduate medical students and doctors on residency programs as per their curriculum.
2. Conducting academic and clinical research work and studies including presentations, audits and publications.
3. Participation in national, regional and international scientific activities with presentations, researches and publications.
E. Visiting neurologist consultants program:
Visits for consultants in different subspecialties are arranged in cooperation with the head of the visiting consultants section in the DHA. There is an average of 10 visiting consultants per year.
F. Other activities:
• The department staff participates in a number of JCI committees such as ACC, PFE, SQE as well as in a number of investigational committees such as medico-legal investigation committees.
• The staff are establishing a number of clinical guidelines and protocols (24 Guidelines)
• The staff conducts clinical audits.
• The staff paticipates in a number of task forces
• The staff conducts professional interviews for neurologists and neurotechnologists who wish to obtain a license to practice in Dubai.
The neurology service was started with the establishment of the hospital (1977) as part of the neurosciences department (including both neurology and neurosurgery).
With the expansion of services, development of the facilities and staff increment, the neurology service became a separate department in 1999.
It is now the biggest neurology department in the UAE, providing services to all DHA hospitals as well as to the northern emirates.
- Registration and Access to Services:
• Outpatient appointments are given to patients referred from hospitals and primary healthcare (PHC) clinics under the DHA.
• Referrals from other departments in Rashid, Latifa and Dubai hospitals as well as from PHC by the on call neurologist.
• Elective admissions by neurologist through outpatient clinics.
• Emergency Admissions through emergency by on call doctors.
• Admissions from other hospitals to neurology inpatient services for case management only after acceptance by the head of department and the hospital administration.
